What is renewable energy:
Renewable energy is energy from sources such as sunlight, wind, rain that are naturally renewable and inexhaustible in duration but limited in the amount of energy that is available per unit of time.
Forms of renewable energy
There are many forms of renewable energy in existence.
- Hydroelectric energy
- Solar energy
- Geothermal energy
This form of energy is generated from movement of water volume and the change in rise or fall from one point to another determine the amount of available energy. It is one of most highly anticipated form of generating electricity in the World.
This form is achieved from the construction of reservoirs and dams which is adopted mostly by the developed world. Aside from dams, hydroelectricity derives it energy from using channels, tunnels along river valley until it reaches the top where as it fall through a penstock to drive a turbine.
This is the widely known source of energy in which the sun produces heat and electricity through solar panels. The conversion of this energy can be done in a few different ways photo-voltaic systems, concentrated power solar, solar water heater.
Photo-voltaic systems are used in converting light into electrical direct current. Concentrated solar power systems use mirrors and tracking systems to focus a large area of sunlight into a small beam and it is the most efficient of all solar technologies.
Wind turbines use blades to collect the wind’s kinetic energy. Thereby uses airflow through wind turbines to generate electric power. Wind energy can be used to pump water or generate electricity, but requires extensive areal coverage to produce significant amounts of energy.
This is the form of energy from plants materials. This can be used directly in combustion of woods to produce heat and cooking. Modern forms of biomass energy are methane generation and production of alcohol for automobile fuel and fueling electric power plants.
This energy originates from the original formation of the planet and augmented by heat from radioactive decay of minerals which seeps out slowly everywhere, everyday.
Geothermal energy can be stored deep in earth’s surface which can be called Earth’s energy, it is used in geothermal heat pumps for heating and cooling buildings.
Renewable energy in Nigeria
In Nigeria, the primary source of energy are biomass and waste. Nigeria faces a great challenge in renewable energy, non-renewable energy like coal, natural gas, and oil are Nigeria major source of energy consumption.
According to an authur Gigi nwagbo he said that while Nigeria possesses an abundance of access to renewable energy sources and a master plan for renewable energy, the country is still behind in renewable energy development and usage.
This may be attributed to the cost of renewable resources when compared to costs associated with fossil-based fuels. Increasing the amount of renewable energy requires that exploiting these resources be made economically attractive.
Interests in shifting renewable energy to mainstream sustainable development are recently growing, due in part to the expanding commercial markets for renewable energy. That are shifting investment patterns away from traditional government and international donor sources toward a greater reliance on private firms and banks.
Switching to renewable energy resources in Nigeria has led to positive contributions to rural development, lower health costs, energy independence, and climate change mitigation.
While renewable energy still cannot compete with fossil fuels on price, the margins are narrowing. Major improvements in energy efficiency and renewable-energy production costs have decreased the amount of capital needed for key applications. There is still a need for capital investment, but costs have often fallen by more than 75% in the last five years.
Because Nigeria’s fossil fuel-based economy will undoubtedly come to an end, searching for alternatives early is of utmost importance. With an abundance of renewable resources, the ability for Nigeria to incorporate renewable energy into its power grid is increasing.
