How To Fix 7 Common Problems Why Generator Won’t Start

Generator won't start solutions

Even when we maintain our generators, some trouble seems to show up at a time and this may be that the generator won’t start or not even generating power. Due to the lack of constant power supply in some places, people tend to prefer using a generator set so as to get electricity.

So now you’ve considered about buying a generator and you got one, it refuses to start or it starts then goes off after some minutes. This happens to most generators and its normal, don’t panic.

To ensure proper engine operation, the Spark plug must be properly gapped and free of Deposits. A dirty plug can cause your generator not to start. So what to do is…

  • Remove the spark plug cap
  • Clean any dirt from around the spark plug base

4. Air Cleaner And Clogged Caburetor

A dirty air cleaner will restrict airflow to the carburetor. To prevent carburetor malfunction, service the air cleaner regularly. If the generator is operated in a dusty area then service more frequently. Never run the generator without the air cleaner. Rapid engine wear will result.

  • Soak the element in clean engine oil and squeeze out the excess oil. The engine will smote during initial start-up it too much oil is left in the element
  • Reinstall the air cleaner element and the cover

5. Low Fuel

What if the fuel is low or no fuel at all? Of course, before putting on a generator set, check the level of the fuel if it needs to be added fuel.

6. Fuel Cup Cleaning

The sediment cup prevents dirt water which may be in the fuel tank from entering the carburetor. If the engine has not been run for a long time, the cup should be cleaned.

  • Turn the fuel valve to the OFF position. Remove the sediment cup and o-ring.
